'A Little Piece of Leather'

A documentary film of the Jackson family through the lens of Emmie Wimberly Jackson

REV. W.J. JACKSON AND EMMIE WIMBERLY JACKSON - CIRCA 1955

Emmie Wimberly Jacklson was born on April 16, 1916 in Gibsland, La., to Earl Wimberly and Maggie Bryant Wimberly. Her husband Watkins  Jackson was born July 19, 1917, in Bienville Parish, La., to Monroe Jackson and Jennie Qualls Jackson.

Emmie and Watkins were married on February 19, 1938, and to that union 10 children were born.

Ten years later they relocated to Galveston, TX, where they continued to raise their family. Thus began the long journey of Watkins as the Pastor of Jerusalem Baptist Church, and Emmie as mother, a thrifty, savvy home manager and seamtress par excellence. Of herself she would always say, “I’m a little piece of leather but well put together.”
